In which I solicit the advice from the dog people in the blogosphere

We want to get a dog.

Right now, we have this big yard, but after our bankruptcy is over, we'll be looking to buy something and I'm sure it will be a condo or townhome. So in about a year, we'll have a small yard.

We have two cats who are my babies. Any animal that joins our family must be OK with the cats and not terrorize them.

Same goes for the kid. Only I think it's more that the dog must be OK with the possibility of the kid terrorizing it. He means well, but, you know, he's three and all.

I want a lap dog. No bigger than 20 pounds. When my car is eventually paid off, I want to trade it in for a smaller sized car. Like a Jetta. Or a Saab. So, the dog must not be so big as to not fit on the front seat next to me.

I don't want a super high energy dog. My husband is adamant that we not get a dog that "shakes". I definitely do not want a dog that requires a lot of grooming.

I've been doing some research and it looks like a pug might be a good fit for our family.

So, now I'm soliciting advice. Does anyone have experience with pugs? Or another breed that would work for us? Horror stories of a breed that we don't want?

Thanks for the support you showed on my recent post. It means a lot.

We had a pug for a couple of years. They are pretty good dogs. Snappy, which might not be so good with kids, and barky but not that high-pitched bark like Chihuahuas or poodles. I really loved the corgi we had for the first five years of our marriage. She was wonderful with the kids as infants and toddlers, was a real cuddler and smart as all get out. We loved that dog and will get another as soon as possible. Check them out!

My vote is for a mutt. But then, I've had a bunch of mutts and I am a mutt lol. I've had purebreds too, chihuahuas, dobermans, st. bernards, but I love my mutts :)

i think that you should get a mutt...like raggs..just don't get a jack russell....those little dogs are definetly yappers....or you could just get another cat...or take one of lisa's dogs...like she would let you

Oh my gosh, that is my all time FAVORITE breed. I used to have two Pugs (Rocky & Daisy) and they were so wonderful. I don't have kids, so I don't know how they would have been with children. But they were good with other dogs and the cats.

They do SHED a lot though, so not sure if you're ok with that aspect. They can also be stubborn but are EASILY motivated by food. They're are piggies for sure!

I truly love the breed's personality. They are DEFINITELY lap dogs (prefer to be on you vs. anywhere else!) and don't need much exercise (with their flat nose you have to be careful to avoid over heating or exhaustion)

They really are 100% family dogs and love and need your attention. They aren't the type of dog you can just leave out in the backyard all by themselves. They have very "funny" personalities and love to entertain. Seriously, I remember one time Rocky stuck his head in an empty bag of chips and was running around the house bumping into everything because he couldn't see. I was damn near peeing myself laughing so hard (I have a sick sense of humor, sue me). So then when I finally got the bag OFF his head, he stuck it right back in to run around some more..he would do anything to make me laugh over and over again.

We plan on getting a female Pug next year sometime. Our current dog (he's only 6 months old) should be more behaved by then and I can begin the Puppy Process all over again! Then that's it...we'll have 5 cats, 1 big dog and 1 little dog and we'll be one BIG happy family!

Keep us posted on what you chose :-)

Hi! One of my very good friend's has a pug. If you want, I can give you her email address or have her email you to talk about it. She seems very happy with him. I personally want a daschund, but I'm doubtful that my cat would accept any dog, or any other animal for that matter...maybe not even a human child. =/

Dog choice - if you must, try a Maltese. They are expensive, but quiet, don't shed much, would get along with the cats, great with kids, very small. My parents had so many dogs (that died), they started to number them rather than give them names. Then we got them a Maltese and they had him for 10 years.

Lhasa Apsos are the best. My 4-legged baby brother was one and now my two 4-legged sons (who are living with my parents while I go to school) are also Lhasas. They are extremely intelligent and great with kids and other animals.

The only problem with Lhasas is that they are very easily SPOILED. They want to be part of the family, not just the mutt on the floor. They want to eat at the same time you do, go to sleep when you do, be near you when your awake. They are like KIDS.

please please consider adopting or rescuing.. million dogs are killed each year because noone wants them, disposable in so many people eyes.

If you must have a purebred, research your breeders--never get a pet from a pet store- they come from puppy mills...

unfortunately this web site is pretty accurate. I see these things all to often.

There are good web sites on the net to help you find a good breeder-what questions to aske, what to look for when you go visit the breeders kennel--aquiring a dog is a commitment for 10-18 years.

sorry to hog the space- spaying, neutering, adopting and rescuing are very near and dear to my heart.

I believe Jenny from LJCFYI has a pug named Oscar, who is frequently shown in pictures and much loved. I mean, I know she has a small dog named Oscar, and I *think* it's a pug. Go check it out, and email her questions if you wish.
